Common questions

Why is my estimate different from my agency's?

Your agency and OPM use your official records: your retirement service computation date, every salary change in your high-3 period, your exact sick leave balance on your last day, any military deposit, and any part-time service. FERSWorth uses the numbers you enter. If one of them differs, so will the estimate. Treat FERSWorth as a planning tool and get an official estimate from your HR or benefits office before you decide.

Where do I find my service computation date (SCD)?

Your SF-50 shows a leave SCD, and many agency self-service systems show a retirement SCD. They can differ: for example, the leave SCD counts military service even if you have not paid the deposit. If you are not sure, ask your HR office for your retirement SCD. If you enter an SCD that already includes military service, do not add the military years again in the app.

What is the high-3?

The highest average basic pay you earned during any 3 consecutive years of service, usually your last 3. Basic pay includes locality pay but not overtime, bonuses or awards. If you enter your current salary and a raise rate instead, FERSWorth projects your pay to your retirement date and averages the last 3 years.

What is my MRA?

Your minimum retirement age, between 55 and 57 depending on your birth year. The app shows yours on the estimate; tap the info button next to it for OPM's table.

Why is there no FERS supplement in my estimate?

The supplement needs your Social Security estimate at 62 from my Social Security. Add it under Edit on the estimate or in Settings. The supplement is also only paid to some retirement types; the app explains which apply to you.

Can it estimate law enforcement, firefighter or air traffic controller retirement?

Not yet. Special category rules, disability retirement, CSRS, CSRS Offset and CSRS-to-FERS transfers are not supported in version 1, and the app says so instead of showing numbers that could be wrong.

Does it include taxes?

No. You can enter your own withholding percentage for a take-home estimate, but FERSWorth does not compute federal or state income tax.

Where does it get COLA and the Social Security earnings limit?

From the official announcements, bundled with the app and refreshed automatically. Settings shows the date of each value.
