Is that degree worth the money?

MajorWorth shows what a college really costs a family at your income, what graduates in your major go on to earn, and how many months of pay it takes to cover the cost. Every number comes from the federal College Scorecard, and every number says how old it is.

What it does

Cost and pay, side by side

Sticker prices and school rankings don't tell you what you would pay or what the degree pays back. MajorWorth puts those two numbers next to each other.

About 5,400 schools

Public and private universities, community colleges, and trade schools across the U.S. that take federal student aid. Search by name or city and filter by state, type, and length.

Your cost, not the sticker price

The average net price paid by families in your income bracket after grants and scholarships, next to the full published cost.

Pay by major

Typical earnings 4 years after graduation for each major at each school, with the national figure for that major for comparison.

Months of pay to cover the cost

The total cost of the program at your income, measured in months of a typical graduate's pay. One number that makes schools and majors easy to compare.

Debt and monthly payment

Typical federal loan debt for the major and what it costs per month on the standard 10-year plan at the current federal rate.

Compare and save

Put school and major pairs side by side, with the best value in each row highlighted, and save the ones you are considering.

How it works

Three steps to a straight answer

01

Tell it about your family

Pick your family's income bracket (or skip it and see the overall average) and your home state. Both stay on your phone.

02

Find a school

Search by name or city. Each school shows what families at your income paid per year, its graduation rate, typical debt, and earnings.

03

Pick a major

See the total cost for the program, the typical debt and monthly payment, what graduates earn, and how many months of pay it takes to cover the cost.

The data

Straight from the source, with the fine print up front

All figures come from the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard. The data is checked for new releases every week. Federal data is solid, but it has limits, and the app shows them instead of hiding them.

Net price is from 2023-24

Your cost is the average net price that first-time, full-time students who received federal aid paid in the 2023-24 school year, by family income. Public schools show the in-state price. Prices usually rise every year, and your own aid offer will differ.

Earnings cover federal-aid students

Earnings are medians for students who received federal grants or loans, which is most but not all students. Earnings by major are for students who graduated in 2017-18 or 2018-19, measured 4 years after graduation.

Debt means federal loans only

Debt figures include federal student loans only. Private loans and Parent PLUS loans are not counted, so the real total can be higher.

Honest about gaps

The Department withholds numbers for small groups to protect students' privacy, so many smaller majors have no earnings figure. MajorWorth says "not reported" or flags a small sample instead of guessing.

MajorWorth is an independent app made by MannyD.dev. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the U.S. Department of Education or any college. For your own cost, use each school's net price calculator and financial aid offer.
